What are the wiring and installation requirements?

What you need to know about installation...

Plug-in Installation
Many stations plug into your home or office via a NEMA 14-50 (or NEMA 6-50) electrical plug. When hiring an electrician, request that they install a NEMA 14-50 (or NEMA 6-50) receptacle for the rating of your JuiceBox or other JuiceNet Device (typically a 40A or 50A circuit). Make sure the receptacle is installed close to where you plan to mount your charging station. The ground prong is furthest away from the JuiceBox. NEMA 14-50 (or NEMA 6-50) input cable length will vary depending on JuiceBox model.

Hardwire Installation
If your station requires hardwired installation, ask your electrician to connect the station with a protected, NEMA-compliant junction box.

How do I determine if my station must be hardwired?
The details below should help you determine the necessary wiring for your station. Please consult with your electrician regarding the specific parts needed for your site, but below we’ve also included an overview of the likely materials you’ll need.

JuiceBox 32

Charging Station Output (continuous load rating up to)  32A (7.7 kW)
Required Circuit Breaker (must be rated to 125% of the continuous load rating) 2-Pole 40A
Example stations: Clipper Creek HCS 40, JuiceBox 32

Plug-In Installation

  • 2 pole, 40A breaker

  • NEMA 14-50 or NEMA 6-50 receptacle (NEMA 14-50R or NEMA 6-50)

  • For the installation wiring , please have your electrician size the conductors for both rated wire temperature and 125% continuous load. Please refer to both the National Electrical Code (NEC) and your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for any additional requirements.1

For an outdoor installation, please add the following:

  • NEMA 14-50R (or NEMA 6-50) outdoor enclosure

  • Shade for the unit (if mounted to the south side of a building) so it is not in direct sun, exceeding the 90°C mark

  • For the installation wiring , please have your electrician size the conductors for both rated wire temperature and 125% continuous load. Please refer to both the National Electrical Code (NEC) and your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for any additional requirements.1

1 The neutral wire is not used, but may need to be present in the receptacle.

Hardwire Installation

  • 2 pole, 40A breaker

  • For the installation wiring , please have your electrician size the conductors for both rated wire temperature and 125% continuous load. Please refer to both the National Electrical Code (NEC) and your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for any additional requirements.1,2,3

For an outdoor installation, please add the following:

  • NEMA rated outdoor junction box with gasketed cover3

  • Shade for the unit (if mounted to the south side of a building) so it is not in direct sun, exceeding the 90°C mark

1 Please, only use the pre-installed, hard-wire whip on the bottom of the box for hard-wire applications. We cannot honor the warranty if any other holes are added to the unit. The hard-wire whip shall be used to connect to either a junction box or disconnecting means, only. It is not long enough and is not meant to go directly into the electrical panel. Do NOT drill any additional holes into the JuiceBox enclosure as it can cause damage to the PCB and/or electronics inside.

2 A fusible disconnect may be required within 6' of your JuiceNet device installation, please consult your local code.

3 JuiceBox only -The junction box will require a knockout size of 3/4" to accommodate the box connector for the pre-wired pigtail.

JuiceBox 40

Charging Station Output (continuous load rating up to) 40A (9.6 kW)
